WithRiyadhandTeheranannouncinginBeijingonThursdaytheofficialre-establishmentoftheirdiplomaticrelations,therearehopesthatapermanentcease-firecanbeagreedtoputanendtotheYemenconflict,adefactoproxywarbetweenthetwoMiddleEastgiantsthathasbeenfoughtfornineyears.

ItisgoodtohearthatSaudiandOmanidelegationsarrivedinYemen"scapitalSana"aovertheweekendtonegotiateapermanentcease-firedealwithHouthiofficials,whichaimstoendhostilitiesandrebuildeffortsandatimelineforforeignforcestoexitthecountry.Ifthetalksgowell,reportedly,anagreementisexpectedtobeannouncedbeforetheEidal-Fitrholiday,whichbeginsonApril20.

ThismeansthatthankstoChina"spro-peaceeffortsandmediation,withthereconciliationofrelationsbetweenSaudiArabiaandIran,andthepositiveroleOmanhasbeenplayingintheprocessaswellastheUnitedNations"support,thestagehasbeensettoendtheconflictinYemen.

Asamatteroffact,endingthewarinYemenhasalwaysbeeninChina"sconsiderationinitsmediationbetweenSaudiArabiaandIran.AsGengShuang,deputypermanentrepresentativeoftheChinesemissiontotheUnitedNations,pointedoutonMarch15,dialogueandnegotiationaretheonlyrealisticwayoutoftheYemenissue,andChinahopesthattheresumptionofdiplomaticrelationsbetweenSaudiArabiaandIranwillcreatefavorableconditionsfortheimprovementofthesituationinYemen.

Beforethearrivalofthedelegations,thetwosideshavealreadyshowntheirrespectivegoodwilltoeachother.TheSaudicoalitionliftedeightyearsofrestrictionsonimportsthroughHouthi-controlledports,andalmostatthesametime,theHouthiforcesannouncedthattheywouldunilaterallyhaltmissileanddronestrikesagainstSaudiArabiaandalloffensiveoperationsonthebattlefield,pledgingthatifSaudiArabiapromisedtoliftitsblockadeofYemenandhaltitsaircampaign,itwillpermanentlyceasefire.

ItisfairtosaythatbyturningswordsintoploughsharesinYemen,oneofthepoorestcountriesintheworldwithapopulationofnearly30million,about80percentofwhomaredependentonhumanitarianaidbecauseofthewar,theBeijing-brokeredresumptionofdiplomaticrelationsbetweenSaudiArabiaandIranisservingasastartingpointforaseriesofpositivechainreactionsintheMiddleEast.

AllthesehavehappenedaftertheUnitedStates""strategicwithdrawal"fromtheregionwherefortoolongithadthoughtitcouldwaywardlyplaycountriesoffagainstoneanotherandspeculateonthemess.Anditwasduringits"stay"thattheregionalconflictsandissuesworsenedandweremadeseeminglyinsoluble,exceptbywar.

Theseriesofpositivechangestheregionhasexperiencedandhasenoughreasontoexpectintheforeseeablefutureshowtotheworldthattherightwaytosolvedisputesshouldalwaysbedialogue,notwar.
